Chapter Thirteen: Punctuation, Its hierarchy, and its Rhetorical Effects

In this chapter the main objective is to understand the purpose of the punctuation. In the A Linguistic Study of Amrican Punctuation by Charles F. Meyer he classifies the purpose of punctuation into three categories. These categories are syntactic, prosodic and semantic. These three categories have been introduced in previous chapters. Syntax is the structure of sentences. Prosody is the study of rhythm and intonation, semantics is the study of meaning.

Syntax is the structure of sentences. This means it will determine the punctuation marks that this sentence will contain. An example of a syntax is when a breathe is needed however there is no comma mark to issue a pause.

Prosody is the rhythm and intonation of a sentence. Writers revise sentences so that there is a rhythm pattern when read by readers. Prosody can also emphasis words and sentences. An example sentence from the book is “Often we revise a sentence…” In that sentence readers most like stress and emphasis the word often because the writer meant for it to be read in that way. Prosody also has much to do with the character of the writer. Each writer has his own style of writing and each writer would prefer his writing to be read in his style.

Semantics is punctuation used to change or impose on the meaning of the sentence. One example from the book that makes it clearer is: 1) the man sitting by the window is talking to himself. 2) My mother, sitting by the window, is talking to herself. In the first sentence we can presume that there is more than one person. However, the second phrases imposes that there is only one person.

A very important word that is used throughout the book and even on the title is the word Choices. Putting a coma, semi-colon, or colon can make a huge difference and this is what the book means by having choices. For example, “I loved the book, but I hated the movie” is different from “I loved the book; I hated the movie”. So if there is one important thing to learn from all the sections of the book it the ability to have choices and using different words and most important different punctuation.

Question Two Assignment

Question Two: Think about a time when tried to convince someone to change his or her mind. How did you go about it? Were you successful? Now think about a time when someone tried to get you to change your mind. What arguments did the person use? Was he or she successful?

It is part of human nature to convince a person on changing his or her opinion when one does not agree with another’s ideas or actions. Almost everyday people tend to give their opinion on a certain aspect and also try to change the opinion of others. Persuasion is the act to convince or seek to persuade. Argument is a process to support each others belief on an issue. Support is to the information to help argument. Persuasion, argument and support are three factors help convince on changing one own or another’s opinion. When I think about trying to change opinions of others I believe it is very important that the person persuading analyze the issue, areas of the issue to convince and then proposing the argument. The one time that I convinced that I remember is my father convincing me to change majors. Also the time that I remember convincing another was to persuade my friend to come to Lynn University.

The one thing that stands out when asking about a person that has convinced me to change my decision is my father convincing me to major in Biology rather then Business. For my whole life I have always wanted to grow up to become a business man, like my father. However, the one person that I have always looked at as a role model and hopefully follow his footsteps convinced me not too. My father character is pretty aggressive which helps me argue and persuade others. In the beginning of last year when I started filling out my applications I told him that I was going to major in business. Somehow over months he finally persuaded me to change majors. I can’t really remember his exact words however, I remember his ways he convinced me. He should me unsuccessful business men with high degree’s, such as master degree’s, and without a job. Though he used a harsh and aggressive way to express himself he had many supportive points. Now I am at Lynn University majoring in biology. So my father was successful in persuading me to change my decision.

Although I go almost everyday trying to change opinions of others, the one time that I really felt that my opinion actually persuade another was when I convinced a friend of mine to come with me to Lynn University. I have known this friend for almost twelve years, since kindergarten. After school was finished he was accepted in Paris at AUP. However, I really wanted him to come with me and I felt that it would much better for both of us if we went somewhere together. After days of persuading and convincing him, he decided to come. I think that I persuaded him more not by convincing him why to go Lynn University, however why not to study in Paris. Today, both of us are enrolled at Lynn University.

I have met many people in my life that either can argument or can not. Even though sometimes they may have good points to support there argument however cannot persuade. On the other hand there others that may have no support but still can argument and convince.

Global Warming Article Five

It is obvious to state that human beings have a major impact on global warming. However, many are changing there habits and trying to decrease the amount of population they cause. In this article they bring out few examples that can help stop global warming. For example, people that used to take two cars to go to the same place are taking one instead. Actions as small as these can help stop global warming if many follow. Another thing that many are taken ing is more action about is turning off electronics when they are not being used. For instance, turning off televisions, computers, lights and other electronics when not used can help stop global warming. Again just being aware of the causes of global warming can help stop it from small daily actions. Now, more people are even riding buses, walking to school, and riding their bikes to lower the amount of greenhouse gases in the air. Recycling also helps stop greenhouse gases. As a result, there are fewer greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere.

Global Warming Article Four

This article talks about what the government is doing to help stop global warming. The government made a law called The Clean Air Act to help stop global warming. The Clean Air Act is making many companies change their products to decrease these problems. Part of the law says that you may not put a certain amount of pollutants in the air. Now, many products have a label on them telling people what this product can do to the environment. By 2015 all products listed on the Clean Air Act will have a label on them. This label consists of a phrase which will be similar to Warning: contains or manufactured with (the chemical would go here).Transportation such as cars, buses, trucks, and motorcycles pollute the air when the fuel is burned. It comes out as a chemical and when mixed in the air causes global warming. The Clean Air Act will eventually have manufactures remove some parts to help decrease the amount of pollution it gives out.

What is Multi Literacy??

Multi literacy is a form of teaching. Literacy pedagogy is different because does not allow the students to become creative. In Literacy pedagogy students tend to follow direction to the fullest and turn in a paper. Multi literacy for students tends to be easier or funner than ordinary literacy. Some common forms of multi literacy teaching is watching a movie and writing a paper about it. Another is the ability to work as a group. Multi literacy can sometimes aim and challenge the students to apply what they are learning rather then just memorizing. In math classes sometime there are take home exams. That may seem very foolish however even if the students are going to ace the test they had to use what they learned in class or from the textbook and apply it.

Global Warming Article Three

This article has many important points however the only that I find very important is the one that supports that all countries in the world must work together to help stop global warming. This is the main common place in global warming. In this article it mentions one group that everyone is familiar with and could help stop global warming, the United Nations. The United Nations will help stop global warming. Even though through the past articles I have stating that all countries must work together to stop global warming, I have realized how about the countries that do not know how or can not afford any projects to help stop global warming. Obviously, the countries that can and have the resources to have already started, for example, the United States and Canada.

Global Warming Article Two

So far in many of the articles written they tend to show that the United States is the main reason of global warming. This is entirely faulse and this article it shows that one important country is also taking the necessary steps to stop Global Warming. Canada has decided to spend 10 billion from 2005 to 2012 to help. Canada's goal is to cut the average annual greenhouse by 270 megations for the years 2008 to 2012. Also they are spending large amounts of money to fund projects that could help decrease the global warming. In this article it shows that yes even canada stopping global warming and it shows that all countires are slowly taking the steps to help.

Global Warming Article One

This article on cnn is about how global warming will cause an economic chaos. In other word global warming will eventually affect the entire world economy. This is one common place with in global warming. This supports the idea that the major common place in global warming is that all the countries will eventually work together to help stop this issue. This article was published in London, England and in the article they mention how former u.s vice president Al Gore should keep on advising the world about this issue. From this we can presume that England and the United States are ready to work toghether to help stop global warming.

Proposal

The What

I propose to construct a website about issues that are happening in the world that we are concerned about. For Each issue we will have a site and form for us to comment on how we can make a difference. Since we do not have many resources to make a difference in many more important issues it is ideal to come up with one issue that we can all have an impact on. After each issue has a site it is then as a class we chose one of them and see how we can stop it.

The How

There are many ways to look at how to do this proposal. However, each step an action must be thought critically and always looking at this benefits and consequences of each action. First and most important is to show that we are involved. So one of the many first steps would be what type and how many websites should you have. Since we are trying to look very professional we may need to construct our own website instead of posting our information on my space or some other website host. We can also post information on wikipedia as an extra. After the website is fully constructed the next step is getting as much people as possible involved. Weather the means are making posters, handing handouts or even having to do a presentation, the main goal is to get as many people involved for support. Now since as a group of student we have a certain limit of power and time the final step would be to send professional letters to the people that have the power to make a change.

Example: Gravel Parking

One of the growing issue that’s arising at Lynn University is getting the gravel parking lots paved. The first step would be making a website to attract the attention of people and the school board. The next would be getting support of other students, which in this case would be easy. Finally would be sending a well written letter to the Board on the issue.

Why

Many must be thinking about how English comes into all this. English throughout the process is taking place. Since we have basically broken the process of this proposal into three parts English is a key factor within all three parts. The first part of constructing the website is very much depending on our English class as a group. We must have an attractive website and furthermore a well written website with phrases that we attract the attention of the audience and we must be sure that after looking at that website they will be involved. The second part is grabbing the attention of the students. This has to be done in a precise way, in a way that the students will become eager to be involved. English affects this part because with in that 81/2 by 11 inches piece of paper must be a well written phrase that everyone that see’s it will remember it. The last part is obviously the most important part. The letter as stated before must be a well written and professional letter. This letter will be sent to the board and later will be read by the entire board which means it has to go beyond the point of just a simple letter that has no spelling or grammar mistakes. This letter must grab the attention of the board and make them make a change. If that first letter does not grab there attention there is no point in sending any more. So English in this process is a very important aspect that has a huge affect and will make a change.

COMMON PLACES

A common place is a phrase or statement that most agree or disagree with. A phrase or statement that is considered a common place is one that is used often that a group uses that implies a shared belief. Also a common place can be to have similar interests, beliefs and culture.

Rhetoric Definitions

Good Rhetoric: A good rhetor is weather he can persuade the public and whether he/she succeeds.

Hitler was able to gain the trust of many and he persuaded a huge amount of people. Even though his ideology was unethical he convinced many to follow and believe in him.

Bad Rhetoric: A Bad rhetor is someone you can not persuade and whether he is ethical or unethical

The bad rhetor in the first scene of the movie would be the top aide for the health and human service. Even though smoking can be clearly known that it is unethical the top aide is shown as a bad rhetor because he was not able to persuade the audience.

Unethical Rhetoric: Unethical rhetoric would be if the rhetoric used actions to persuade others for a negative cause.
Hitler is a pure example of an unethical rhetoric. He persuaded everyone that it was Jews fault that the economy was going downhill. Hitler’s ideology is known to be unethical. His objective was to eliminate the Jewish population.

Ethical Rhetoric: A rhetor who is persuading for a good cause cause

The head chief of the health and human services is also shown as a bad rhetor, however an ethical one as well becuase smoking is unethical.
